Lincoln Park Zoo welcomes baby zebra

The Lincoln Park Zoo has announced the birth of a rare Grevy’s Zebra, born August 14. The zoo’s 13-year-old resident Grevy’s Zebra Adia delivered the healthy foal after a year-long gestation period.

The foal, who has yet to be named, has reddish brown stripes that will turn black over time, according to the zoo’s statement. The newborn can already walk and run, in line with survival instincts which help protect the Grevy’s Zebra species from predators.

“It’s hard not to smile when seeing this energetic foal,” said Curator Dan Boehm. “Not only is the zebra foal a joy to visit, but its birth is significant for this endangered species.”

The foal will join three other zebras at Lincoln Park Zoo’s Camel and Zebra area. Grevy’s Zebras are the largest of the three Zebra species, and the world’s largest equine animal. The species is native to northern Kenya and southern Ethiopia.

Habitat loss and poaching have endangered the Grevy's Zebra species. The new foal is an exciting addition to the Lincoln Park Zoo, and a success in its efforts to bolster and protect the species.
