McDonald’s will open their first spinoff restaurant, CosMc’s, in Bolingbrook. The chain will focus on coffee and specialty drinks, aimed to compete with other beverage brands like Starbucks and Dunkin’.

The new spinoff will allow customers to enjoy customized drinks that are normally difficult for standard McDonald’s restaurants to make. CosMc’s will offer caffeinated options such as churro frappes, s’mores cold brew and turmeric-spiced lattes, alongside non-coffee drinks like sour cherry energy bursts and a blackberry mint green tea.

This new launch will allow McDonald’s to enter into a $100 billion market, where their current presence is not strong. CosMc’s locations will be built in a variety of different layouts, that include multiple drive-thru lanes and the ability to pay at the speaker in order to speed up serving times.

The new McDonald’s-owned brand is inspired by the McDonaldland mascot, CosMc, a six-handed space alien who craves McDonald’s food. CosMc appeared in brand advertisements in the 1980s and ‘90s, and the company shifted their focus on marketing with their mascots after the success the Grimace Birthday Meal brought early this year.

This first location is part of the first wave of CosMc restaurants to open, with the parent company planning to open 10 restaurant locations in Texas during 2024.
