Metra has announced an expansion of its Union Pacific (UP-NW) Line, adding an additional 12 trains to the route's standard weekday schedule. Beginning April 3, service will increase to every 30 minutes at minimum during peak hours.
Three new trains will depart from Chicago between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., providing rush hour commuters with further convenience. Arlington Heights riders will have additional express service, with new in and outbound trains scheduled at 7:25 a.m. and 5:07 p.m.
According to Metra, a number of existing departure and arrival times have been modified to make room for the additional service. View the updated schedule here.
The expansion comes just weeks after the start of a three year construction project along the Kennedy expressway. With major delays in store, Metra aims to mitigate the strain on commuters with the expansion.
Metra CEO Jim Dirwinski cited rider feedback as a consideration in the development of the expansion, noting that the new schedule will “Increase capacity and convenience by expanding peak period as well as off-peak service.”
“With a major multiyear rehab project scheduled to start on the Kennedy Expressway, this new schedule allows Metra to provide more commuters with a viable and much less stressful alternative to driving”, said Dirwinski.
