Major delays are in store for drivers as the next phase of the 150 million dollar Kennedy Expressway construction project begins this week.
According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), the construction will impact all reversible express lanes along the highway. The construction will include repairs to the interstate’s reversible lane access system, pavement patching, new highway signage, LED lighting upgrades, and bridge structure replacements.
The construction will cause lane and ramp closures through the fall of 2024. The exact timeline of the construction is subject to change depending on weather conditions and other factors.
First opened in 1960, the Kennedy Expressway is one of Chicago’s main traffic arteries, serving more than 275,000 vehicles each day according to IDOT. While the ongoing construction will create some short-term inconveniences for drivers, the project will vastly improve road conditions for commuters in the long term.
