PAWS Chicago, the city’s largest No Kill humane organization, will be receiving dozens of cats and dogs today, September 1, from multiple shelters in Louisiana. This will allow their shelter partners in Louisiana much-needed space to continue rescuing animals that have been directly affected by the hurricane.
PAWS Chicago’s rescue van departed early Wednesday morning to meet the rescue partner and animals at a safe meeting point unaffected by the storm. The van previously filled with supplies donated by the Chicago community for affected shelters will be filled with rescued animals en route to the PAWS Chicago Medical Center.
At the PAWS Chicago’s Medical Center, each pet will be given complete medical examination and care, vaccinations, microchips and spay/neuter surgeries as needed. Multiple dogs will be treated for heartworm, which on average takes about three months. Once medically cleared, each pet will be available for adoption through PAWS Chicago’s In-Person Adoption Application Process.
PAWS Chicago’s need for resources will increase as additional foster homes and medical attention will be required to care for these animals. PAWS Chicago welcomes donations and asks for people in Chicago to open their homes to foster or adopt pets.
