A mural honoring Ruth Bader Ginsburg began to appear on the wall of the Sephora store at 605 N. Michigan Ave. on October 24. The work-in-progress by artists Cristina Vanko and Rachel Lechocki currently features a portrait of the late Supreme Court Justice next to a pattern of hand-painted flowers. Eventually, it will include the RBG quote: “Women belong in all places where decisions are being made.”

Nonprofit organization Sounding Boards Chicago commissioned the painting. According to a press release, Sounding Boards focuses on “organizing and funding social justice mural projects across the city.” It was developed in response to the Black Lives Matter protests by Christina Brown, principal of the Michigan Ave. architecture and interior design firm Eastlake Studio.

“Right now, people are voting for the next American president, and the legacy Ruth Bader Ginsburg left behind will soon be replaced with a candidate that has no intent of upholding everything she stood for in her incredible career supporting human rights,” said Brown. “So, as in previous murals we’ve sponsored that promote social justice and racial equality, we hope to remind everyone what’s at stake through these artistic expressions.”

Brown also thanked Sephora on Michigan Ave. for proving “a major platform” and “their willingness to host these artworks.”
