As part of a new initiative, Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is making significant strides in modernizing the office of the Secretary of State’s DMV services with the introduction of the Fast Lane pilot program.

In an attempt to enhance the customer experience, kiosks will eliminate the dreaded trip to the DMV, eliminating long lines by enabling faster transaction times. This makes it convenient to adapt to the fast-paced needs of today's residents. Fifteen kiosks throughout the Chicago area, suburbs and central and southern Illinois will be available in select Mariano’s, Jewel-Osco and Kroger stores. The kiosks will be able to provide residents with a convenient option for handling their vehicle registration renewals and license plate stickers.

Users will be able to print vehicle registration renewals and license plate stickers on-site. For those renewing their driver’s licenses or state IDs, the kiosks will provide a temporary document to use while the new card is mailed directly to the applicant.

In a commitment to accessibility, all services at the kiosks will be available in both English and Spanish, with plans to introduce additional languages and services if the pilot program proves successful. This inclusive approach ensures that all Illinois residents can easily navigate the registration and renewal processes.

One of the more attractive features of the new kiosks is the cost-effectiveness of the renewals. Fees will be lower than those charged by most currency exchanges or emissions testing sites, making it a budget-friendly option for residents. However, a transaction fee of $4.95 will apply, along with any applicable credit card processing fees.

While the kiosks simplify many processes, it's important to note that driver’s license renewals will still require a PIN code, which will be mailed to applicants. Additionally, individuals seeking a REAL ID or those applying for a new license must still visit a traditional DMV office.

With these innovative kiosks, Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is paving the way for a more user-friendly and efficient DMV experience in Illinois. By embracing technology and customer service, the state is not only modernizing its operations but also enhancing the overall experience for its residents. As the pilot program rolls out, there’s great anticipation for its potential success and expansion in the future.
