Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium has begun a multi-year renovation project that will overhaul some of the institution's best-known attractions. The project, set to be completed by 2027, will feature long-term reinforcements to ensure the continued growth and success of the aquarium.

According to a statement released by Shedd, the renovations will encompass improvements to many areas of the aquarium. The project will bring visitors new immersive and educational experiences, more space for research labs, modernized wildlife conservation infrastructure, and investments in environmental learning programs.

Originally constructed in 1971, the 90,000-gallon Caribbean Reef exhibit holds a variety of coral reefs and ocean life and has long been one of the aquarium’s biggest attractions.

The exhibit is known for housing Nickel, a beloved rescued green sea turtle. The habitat is also home to scuba divers who hand-feed sea creatures and interact with visitors through two-way speakers.

Under the renovation plan, The Caribbean Reef will be replaced by the new “Wonder of Water” exhibit. "Wonder of Water" will feature saltwater and freshwater creatures and offer a new home to the marine life currently inhabiting the Caribbean Reef.

The future of the popular scuba diver program remains uncertain, but a Shedd spokesperson told the Sun-Times that the aquarium will explore similar programs once the renovated exhibit opens.

The aquarium’s plans also include the new “Caribbean Tunnel,” a 40-foot underwater tunnel where guests will be able to view their favorite sea creatures, including Nickel, the beloved green sea turtle.

As Shedd Aquarium embarks on this significant transformation, visitors can look forward to the new Wonder of Water exhibit while relishing the memories of the iconic Caribbean Reef habitat.
