Tesla, the renowned electric vehicle maker, is on the brink of securing a large service center in the southwest corner of the Loop, according to Crain’s. This move would contribute to the increased investment and continuous growth experienced in the surrounding area in recent years.
The company is reportedly close to finalizing a lease for approximately 100,000 square feet at 717 S. Desplaines St.. If the deal is completed, Tesla is expected to transform an existing industrial building located on the site into a Tesla vehicle service and maintenance facility.
The Austin, Texas-based company, led by tech mogul Elon Musk, currently operates six service centers throughout the Chicago suburbs, and one city service center in Avondale. In downstate Illinois, Tesla maintains an eighth Tesla service center in Bloomington.
As electric vehicle manufacturing continues to surge in the United States, Illinois is looking to cement itself as a growing hub for the EV industry. In a section of the city known for being largely undeveloped, Tesla’s expansion could further solidify Chicago’s stake in the EV industry and green initiatives.
This past June, Chicago was named among the nation’s top ten “greenest” cities.
