The University of Chicago has partnered with IBM, Google, and The University of Tokyo to further the development of quantum computing. Through investments and research, UChicago is prepared to transform the future of quantum technology.
According to IBM, quantum computing is a fast developing technology that utilizes the rules of quantum mechanics to solve complex problems. Quantum computers are capable of quickly performing tasks that are too complex for traditional computers.
Quantum computing systems have the potential to impact the development of clean energy and electric automation. The intricate systems could also further humanity’s understanding of the universe, providing explanations for cosmic phenomena like dark matter and dark energy.
According to The University of Chicago, the collaboration aims to deliver a high-powered quantum computing system by 2033, capable of solving some of our world’s most significant challenges.
Over the next decade, IBM will invest $100 million into helping UChicago and The University of Tokyo create the blueprints for a quantum supercomputer. Google has pledged an additional $50 million towards research into the development of fault-tolerant quantum computers and quantum-trained workforces.
“Quantum information science and technology is at a crossroad, where foundational discovery and technical innovation will combine to create real breakthroughs. The University of Chicago is thrilled to partner in this endeavor”, said UChicago President Paul Alivistos.
Faculty grants and funding for student projects will be provided to promote research breakthroughs. The collaboration will also support startups in the greater Chicago area, enlisting the help of students to further advancements in the quantum computing field. The global initiative seeks to develop quantum computing ethically and responsibly, for the betterment of all.
