Caleb Williams and the Bears roll on!

Might our beloved Chicago Bears football team actually have a professional offense? That feels good just to put into words! Just typing that sentence was some nice, positive therapy.

The answer?

All signs point to a big old YES, and for the long-suffering Bears fans out there, what a pleasure it has been! We all have seen some decent Bears defenses in the past couple of decades, but offensively? More often than not, it has been somewhere between a train wreck and (at best) a bad fender-bender on the side of the road.

Now, suddenly? The Bears’ offense looks for real. Professional. Dangerous. Effective. Again, that feels good just to say! This team has weapons galore at all the skill positions and a young quarterback who is starting to learn how to use them all.

It almost sounds weird to say, but how do you defend this Bears offense? Do you concentrate on star receiver DJ Moore? Or maybe try and stop one of the NFL’s emerging best tight ends in Cole Kmet? Just when you figure out those two, you still have to take into account veteran star wide out Keenan Allen AND a rookie first-round pick, the sure-handed Rome Odunze.

That’s a lot of weapons at Caleb Williams’ disposal, and that is just the passing game!  Running back Deondre Swift has been red-hot the last three games, dancing, weaving and speeding ahead for solid yardage, while RB2 (running back no. 2) Roshon Johnson is a load and then some to bring down.

All that for opposing defenses to handle is no easy task for sure, and we haven’t even mentioned the quarterback, Caleb Williams. Shaky in his first two games, Williams has really progressed of late, and while still prone to a mistake or two, he now is making plays.

Dangerous from the pocket as a pure passer, he additionally shows the ability to scramble and pick up yards with his legs.

You put all of the above together, including a not-yet-great, but improving, offensive line, and you really make it tough for defenses to stop you. The expression “pick your poison” comes to mind when figuring out who to try and stop.

And let me just add–again, what a pleasure this all is to write!  I’ve got a big smile on my face as I type away. My fingers are doing the “ happy dance.”

So many years of frustration with the Bears’ offense, and in particular the quarterbacks, now finally we have crossed to the other side: a real professional NFL offense. (Cue the “Hallelujah” music.)

Hopefully.

We probably shouldn’t jump to too many conclusions just yet, with the toughest part of their schedule still to come, but the arrow is definitely pointing up.

Let’s hope they keep it up, and especially stay healthy.

If things do somehow turn sour, and they revert to the Bears offense of old, please don’t blame this messenger.  If and when that does happen (and you think I jinxed them) don’t bother writing to complain,

I will be out of town.
