College football is still the best!

There are many problems with college sports these days. Specifically, at least of late, with college football.

Players getting paid—in some cases, millions from alumni—is just one of many potential complaints. The transfer portal is another. Players can now move from school to school freely and without much restriction.

It is a throwback, no doubt, to the way it was, even as little as four or five years ago.

For better or for worse, it is a new landscape for collegiate football. Every year, teams bring in numerous new players from other schools, sometimes completely changing their rosters. The days of schools “developing” players, ones who might sit on the bench for a couple of years and then finally get to play junior or senior year, have gone the way of the typewriter or globe—almost completely extinct. Instead, any player unhappy with his playing time, or maybe offered more money by another school, simply changes schools for the next season.

No question, all of the above issues can be troublesome—a clear and defined negative in the mind of many sports fans. 

Understood, and felt for sure by this particular writer. But after watching the first few weeks of college football, I can tell you the enthusiasm and passion for the game, from fans, players, and coaches, is as high as it has ever been.

The college football experience is still a great one!

Come game day, all is forgotten with the contracts and transfer situations, and it instead becomes great rivalry games with packed stadiums full of loud and loyal supporters.

The talent on display from these young men is amazing. These athletes have trained year-round, in the weight room, with personal workouts, team workouts, and more—all making for superb performance levels.

The competitiveness of most games is “off the charts” good, and fan enthusiasm (despite all the other negative minutiae) is as great as it has ever been.

Laid up a bit the past couple of weeks, I was able to watch much more college football than I normally do. With a sampling of numerous games, I can safely and comfortably conclude that college football is still an awesome sport. Still a great watch. 

The atmosphere in the various stadiums? LSU at Mississippi, Michigan State at Notre Dame, Kentucky at Texas A&M, Colorado at Northwestern, North Carolina at Clemson, and Florida at Auburn, just to name a few from the past weekend—so much fun! Loud, enthusiastic, passionate—all that and more.

Yes, despite all the problems it has currently… college football is still the best!
