Watching basketball this past weekend, I can honestly say that I spent more time viewing the women’s games than I did the men’s, and let me just say… “Man, can these women play!”
Truly amazing how far the ladies’ game has come. With the skill level, athleticism, and intensity of competition where it is now, I can say with more than solid certainty that I (this longtime basketball-crazed fan) enjoy the women’s game every bit now as much as the men’s.
Not just the great marquee teams like Connecticut, South Carolina, UCLA, Texas and USC—those schools are well publicized, but also the other teams, not as highly ranked, as their level of play has increased tremendously. In recent years, that’s made the ladies’ games across the board so much more fun to watch.
Stars like JuJu Watkins from USC, Paige Beuckers from UConn, Madison Booker from Texas and Lauren Betts from UCLA lead the way, and are sensational without question, but talented players abound everywhere for just about all teams now and make for a significant increase in quality of play and watchability.
All the great ingredients are there. The fans are totally into it, the emotions are at fever pitch, the intensity and competitiveness next level, and as mentioned before, the skill level and athleticism the players currently possess is just tremendous.
The only negative I can see is that for the hoops-infested wackos like myself, it used to be a chore just to watch and keep track of all the men’s games during this wild time of year. Now? We must add the women’s game to our already way too busy viewing menu, and the “overflow effect” may even further challenge the spectating experience.
But not to worry, we shall find a way! This is the best time of the year, and as basketball fans, we can look forward to what should be an amazing three weeks of emotionally draining and always exciting March Madness games.
