Wait? Kids are starting to go back to school already? Wow.
Isn’t it way too early for this? Too early for books and desks and teachers and homework…
At least in the eyes of this long since removed from classrooms outside observer, it definitely is!
I say kids and parents must stand up and resist. Fight this injustice. Protest, fight back, go to school board meetings, boycott school supply sales, take to the streets if you must—whatever it takes. The school year dates must change!
Seriously though, early to mid-August back to school? I mean the summer has just begun (sort of at least, and it is flying by way too fast), and kids are in no proper mind to sit behind a desk and listen to teacher instructions. Not yet anyway.
To me, after Labor Day is the perfect time to start. You’ve had a nice long summer, got in most of your desired “to-do list” activities, and now finally your mindset starts to convert. Come September you can feel the real end of summer coming and then the true “back to school” feeling starts to hit.
I know the excuse is that the state mandates so many days the kids have to be in school, so you have to start early to get those days in, and there are certain requirements that school districts have to follow and yada, yada, yada—and to all of that I respectfully say…. Phooey!
I don’t care, what the state mandates— change the rules, change the calendar, extend a little bit more into June if you have to—whatever it takes. Think about it. The early part of June, when most schools let out, is usually pretty lousy weather anyways, so no problem staying in the classroom till mid-June instead of being released to the wild in the earlier part of that month.
The bottom line is thus: No one right now is ready to go “back to school.” Not even close. You have to have kids with the proper learning mindset, and you can’t tell me that right now these youngsters are ready to sit, listen and learn. Not when Lollapalooza just ended, Country Thunder is still to come, and the Cubs still have two more months to play.
So, resist. Fight back against the injustice…and don’t you dare buy those school supplies just yet. That can wait. There is still more summer fun to indulge in.
Authors Note: I am available to make appearances at your local school board meetings at any time. (Have your people call mine.)
