It surely won’t win any awards for outstanding production, writing, cinematography or musical score—and the critics are treating it like a butcher does raw meat, BUT, trust your friendly Chicago Star quasi-movie critic… the new Jerry Seinfeld Netflix movie called Unfrosted is hilarious.
Very funny throughout and a truly enjoyable view.
I wasn’t even planning on watching the movie, to be honest, but in a moment of televised weakness , I hit the “app” section of my TV panel selection and up it popped. Curious, and as a fan of Seinfeld I thought I would give it a quick check out.
Exactly one hour and thirty-six minutes later I sat back on my favorite TV watching chair feeling a little bit like my tummy does after finishing Thanksgiving dinner. Happy and satisfied.
The movie is loosely based (and when I say “loose” it has about as much actual factual content as orange juice does real oranges) on the Battle Creek, Michigan neighboring rival breakfast company dynasties, Post and Kellogg’s. More specifically it is about their race to produce what became a breakfast sensation of its own—The Pop Tart.
The cereal jokes are cereal-ously funny. In fact, you know it’s a good movie when you’re watching by yourself, and you are laughing out loud. My wife was in the other room catching up on one of her Sci-Fi channel shows (not for me thanks—I once saw a book titled “Astrology For Dummies” and thought, yes, exactly), but she even came in to check out it out what the commotion was and see what I was laughing about.
It was that good.
Now, be forewarned. If you are looking for high quality, well drawn out character and plot themes, great acting performance or exquisite dramatic writing, Forget about it. This is not that movie. This movie will, instead, bring you down to the last common denominator of your humor quotient, so make sure you head into the viewing experience with proper mental mind set ( nothing deep, just entertain me and make me laugh.)
Admittedly much of the humor will resonate more with an older crowd than the younger. The cereal commercials and toy references are from days gone by and will come at you from all angles. The commercial ditties, the music, the food selections and the toys of that generation such as Slinky, Baseball cards, the Sting Ray bicycle, Chef Boyardee Beefaroni are but some of many that bring back memories of our childhood.
While the acting may not exactly be Shakespearean or award worthy— the list of actors and actresses appearing on screen is! Seinfeld himself stars, but check out this for just a partial list of stars appearing in the 90 minute film: Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer, Cedric The Entertainer, Max Greenfield, Daniel Levy, Fred Armisen, Christian Slater, Tony Hale, Sebastian Maniscalco, Hugh Grant, James Marsden, Peter Dinklage and Jon Hamm.
Some with more major roles (Schumer, McCarthy, Gaffigan)— others with more cameo appearances, but all with pretty funny segments which at times, if you let yourself go just a bit, can come dangerously close to bordering on the hilarious.
In conclusion. Don’t you dare listen to those, too-much-starch-in-the -pants critics who gave this movie one star or two star ratings at best.
Check out this new Netflix movie and see for yourself.
