“It’s A Heartache” is now the new Chicago Bears theme 2

The iconic melody, "It's A Heartache” —for those reading this who are perhaps too young to remember it—was a song recorded by Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler, released in November 1977, to great acclaim.

The single hit No. 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Singles charts, and the tune did even better abroad, bagging the No. 1 spot on the charts in Australia, Argentina, and even fussy France. Tyler’s single sold one million copies in the USA and six million worldwide.

After last weekend’s Chicago Bears heartbreak performance, I might recommend this ballad take on a new role. My take is this: Tyler’s song should — at least temporarily— replace the team’s official anthem, "Bear Down, Chicago Bears."

Tyler's late 70's hit song, sung by her in a famous raspy voice, with equal parts desperation, frustration, and resignation, seems to capture pretty much how all Chicago Bears fans feel after yet another painful defeat to the Cleveland Browns this past Sunday.

It should be noted that the defense continues to shine (at least for the first three quarters), but the offense was nothing less than brutal. Quarterback Justin Fields is a quality kid we all are rooting for, but the entire offense is so awkward and un-smooth that it is almost physically painful to watch.

There is no flow at all. It's different from many other NFL teams who seem so much more natural in their offensive execution. The potential is there, there is talent at all positions, and Fields' athleticism is unquestioned—but right now, they are making the “three-and-out” almost an art form.

For those unfamiliar with football, this is NOT a good thing.

Anyway, back to Bonnie Tyler and her hit song, which certainly could be the current Chicago Bears theme song.

The lyrics are below in bold. The comments on the right (hopefully) capture the frustration of most Bears fans:

It's a heartache. Oh man, you can say that again! Nothing but a heartache. Recent games have taken years off Bears fans' lives.

Hits you when it's too late. Bonnie, don't you know it!

Hits you when you're down. This team has been “down” for way  too  many years now

It's a fool's game. But, you know. We do look good at times !

Nothing but a fool's game. Point taken, don’t rub it in.

Standing in the cold rain. Bears fans are weather tough if nothing else.

Feeling like a clown. She talkin' about the guy next to me with the Bear mask, Bear claws, and a Henry Burris jersey?

It's a heartache. Oh, those 4th quarter, close-game collapses!

Nothing but a heartache. The ball was right there for Mooney to make the miracle catch!

Love him 'til your arms break. Our arms are doing just fine. Hearts?  Not so much.

Then he lets you down. Again and again and again and again.

It ain't right with love to share. Misery does love company. Through it all, we Bears fans stick together.

When you find he doesn't care for you.   We care. Maybe too much?

It ain't wise to need someone. Understood. You would think we would learn.

As much as I depended on you. We live for our Sundays.

Oh, it's a heartache.  Three interceptions, three sacks, and we still lose?

Nothing but a heartache.  Bonnie, you nailed it!

Hits you when it's too late. Starting to hate 4th quarters. Can we stop at the 3rd?

Hits you when you're down. Don’t we know it?

It's a fool's game.  Again, don’t rub it in.

Nothing but a fool's game. Yeah, but we're still going to root for them!
