Depending on your perspective, Super Bowl 59 (sorry, LIX) was either a joyful celebration of the great Philadelphia Eagles team—or a complete thundering dud if you were… well, basically, any fan not from Philadelphia!
So disappointing.
Almost all the experts and prognosticators anticipated a close, tightly fought game with neither team having much of a clear advantage. Indeed, it appeared all the ingredients were there for a tremendous matchup, maybe even coming down to the final possession or, even better, heading into overtime. Excitement level was near fever pitch near kickoff to start the game.
But all was for naught. Whatever those “ingredients” were for this great game, they didn’t mesh very well. The recipe for a great Super Bowl turned out to be a disaster, like a baked cake gone bad. Really bad.
By halftime, the game was completely over. Philadelphia led 27-0! Absolute domination. And anyone still thinking the miracle of Patrick Mahomes was still a possibility starting the second half—those thoughts were shut down quickly when the Eagles went up 34-0 midway through the third quarter.
Game over. Time to put away the mini hot dogs, guacamole dip, and starting-to-coagulate cheese nachos, clean up the kitchen and head to bed.
Amazingly, the powerhouse Philadelphia team won big without their star running back, Saquon Barkley, having a good game. The Chiefs defense shut him down (just 56 yards on over 20 carries), but the problem was they couldn’t stop anyone else—particularly quarterback Jalen Hurts, who played superbly in leading the Eagle offense to multiple scores.
Defensively? Absolute domination by the “Mean Green” of the Eagles, sacking QB Mahomes multiple times and having him on the run like a mouse on one of those mini treadmills (running a lot, but getting nowhere).
In conclusion, congrats to the Eagles for winning the Super Bowl so convincingly, but what a disappointing game for the rest of us—the neutral fans who were just looking forward to a game with a lot of excitement, suspense and drama.
None of that to be had. Instead, we got a complete dud.
Oh well… for the sports fans out there, there is always something new to look forward to. The NFL season may be over now, but look at the bright side. The glory of March Madness (the college basketball tournament) is right around the corner!
