The Chicago Bears officially kicked off their 2026-27 NFL season on Sunday, securing a breathtaking 59-37 win over last year's NFC South champions, the Carolina Panthers. The victory marked the highest-scoring game in opening day history for the NFL.
The matchup held tantalizing narratives for two teams both looking to build upon strong 2025 seasons behind young franchise quarterbacks Caleb Williams and Bryce Young. Bears head coach Ben Johnson also looks to continue his Chicago legacy after quickly endearing himself to the Windy City in his first campaign.
The season wasted no time heating up, opening with a lovably chaotic first half that produced a relentless stream of exciting moments. The Bears started the action by fumbling on the fourth play of the game, which led to a quick Panthers touchdown. Chicago then responded with three unanswered scores, including a remarkable downfield catch from Rome Odunze over the top of an opposing defender.

Carolina then turned it around by throwing a 51-yard touchdown before scoring again after the Bears failed to convert a fourth down from their own 21-yard line. A muffed punt led to both teams trading field goals before the Bears finished the second quarter with an impressive drive to take the lead 31-24 going into halftime.
The second half started much the same, with both QB’s guiding well-crafted touchdown possessions. Chicago eventually began to pull away after an explosive 61-yard TD run from second-year back Kyle Monangai was followed immediately by a Panthers fumble and another Bears score. The Panthers showed some fight late with a final fourth-quarter score, but time ran out as the Bears claimed a remarkable opening day win.
Per ESPN, Williams finished with a fantastic 21-29, 269 yards, and two touchdowns stat line that bodes well for a critical year three ahead. The running back duo of Monangai and DeAndre Swift also continued their momentum from last year with a whopping 224 yards and four TD’s combined.

The contest was an incredible start to what promised to be an exciting 2026-27 NFL season. Coming into the year, supporters and media alike questioned a suspect Bears defense while hoping the offense could pick up where they left off. In that sense, the game played out relatively to expectation for Bears fans, albeit to an absolute extreme.
While there will be plenty of both positives and negatives to take away from the game, one thing remains certain… It's good to have football back!
The Bears will now host their first home game of the season next Sunday, Sept. 20, against divisional rivals the Minnesota Vikings at Soldier Field.
