First Woman Commodore Yacht Club

Lisa Curcio Gaston is the first woman to be elected commodore in the Chicago Yacht Club's 148-year history.

For the first time in nearly 150 years, the Chicago Yacht Club will be helmed by a woman. Lisa Curcio Gaston was elected commodore of the club this year.

A Chicago native, Gaston says she has always loved the water. She joined the Club in 1997 and has been an avid boater for decades. During the summer months, she lives on her boat. She has served CYC in a wide variety of capacities, most recently as vice commodore.

Gaston operates her own 52-foot boat and tells girls of all ages that boating and sailing are open to them; they can achieve their goals.

The Chicago Yacht Club has more than 1,400, members according to its website. It is one of the oldest in the country and boasts one of the largest junior sailing programs in the nation.
