Debbie Robertson picks up the phone call almost immediately and learns she’s been nominated for Doorperson of the Month. “Oh my, this is such a great honor,” she says with her warm voice filled with pride.
Upon visiting “77 West” as residents call it, Debbie is smiling while cleaning and restocking the coffee machine. She says, “I’ve been here for 11 years, and I love it here.” Debbie was hired on the spot following 18 years of experience at the State Street Marshall Fields, and years working security at McCormick Place.
“I’m the Supervisor of Security Staff Lead, and am featured in the building’s promotional video,” which runs continually in the lobby. West 77 has an extremely welcoming lobby complete with a pool table, cooking area, fresh coffee and furniture configurations that are hospitable for multiple groups of people to visit at one time.
Born and raised in Chicago, Debbie’s background in customer service started at an early age. Her Dad ran his own business, Handy Hardware. “Everyone in the neighborhood knew him, and his picture was on the wall.”
Debbie reflects on her time at Marshall Fields, “Back in the day at Marshall Fields, they had us involved in all levels of the business, which prepared me to multitask in this position.” She goes on to describe herself as headstrong, independent and detail oriented.
West 77 used to be known as the Oakwood building, and was notorious for film and theater stars opting to stay there. Nowadays, West 77 offers rockstar style amenities including an indoor heated pool, gym, sauna, grilling area, party and gaming room, a state of the art business center, and conference room.
“The citywide view from the 25th floor rooftop is second to none. And during the summer we set tables and chairs out on the sidewalk for residents and their dogs to enjoy.” West 77 hosts a number of events for the residents including jewelry sales and celebrating the building’s pet of the month.
In her spare time, Debbie enjoys music, movies and dining. “I want to be able to tell residents where to go for the best food in Chicago.” She also enjoys Broadway shows like Betty Boop and The Color Purple when they come to town.
The trendy River North neighborhood has evolved. West 77 hosts many young people, “but there are still a few elderly residents that have been here since I started.” The pleasure for Debbie is getting to know folks.
“People realized I was out last week sick, and warmly welcomed me back.” She credits the success of West 77 to not only the great residents, but also the excellent management team.
Debbie’s dad taught her that, “excellence counts, and to continue to be friendly, strive for the best, and always put God first.” To say the residents are lucky to have her would be an understatement.
