June Doorperson of the Month: Gonzalo Deluna raises the bar at One Chicago

Residents at One Chicago call him “Luna,” a fond nickname for Gonzalo Deluna. And Luna’s only been part of the team at One Chicago for six months.

“This is my first career experience as a concierge, so I am incredibly grateful for this nomination. It’s what I'm supposed to be doing. I’ve found my future.”

The job opportunity came about while he was employed as a valet at Holy Name Cathedral, right across the street. Luna says, “I had all sorts of different customer service positions before landing on One Chicago’s concierge team.”

One Chicago spans an entire city block, complete with a Lifetime Fitness, a Whole Foods Market, apartments, condominiums, and lofts. As if that’s not enough, there are also restaurants and even the State One Chicago Hotel, all located on the property.

Luna explains that the motto for the concierge staff is to “raise the bar.” He offers the latest example of doing just that.

“A resident recently had a bird fly into her window. So we helped her get this injured bird to an animal care center because animal health and safety is important to her. At the end of the day, we want residents to feel seen and heard.”

Luna grew up in East Chicago, Ind., and now lives in Irving Park and proudly says he has a “beautiful wife and family.” And he loves being a dad to his 7-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter.

Luna goes on to say, “I’m proud that my son reads and draws, and that I have the opportunity to parent a child of each gender during these complicated times.”

One of Luna’s favorite parts of the job at One Chicago is the opportunity to interact with both renters and owners, and all of the requests he handles. On one recent hot day, the staff was inundated with 17 calls about air conditioners. Luna says, “We resolved everyone’s issues, and both renters and owners were pleased.”

Luna feels his strengths include the ability to shift gears, adapt to situations, and multitask. He says, “I still have a ways to go learning everybody’s names.” No doubt, Luna will get there.
