Darryl Alexander has witnessed the evolution of Chicago’s New Eastside as Lead Doorperson for Park Shore Condominiums.
“I’ve been here for 26 years. Our next-door neighbor to the South used to be a golf course.” The neighborhood, known as Lakeshore East, is bustling with activity right near Lake Michigan and Navy Pier with breathtaking views.
Darryl introduces Jerome as his counterpart. The door staff works in two-person teams for most of the week. “I’ve worked with Jerome for 25 years, 23 as Lead Doorperson for the Park Shore.”
Darryl proudly explains that the Park Shore was and remains a highly sought-after address. “Ernie Banks lived here. Seeing Chicago athletes, broadcasters and celebrities is common -- we remain the “A” number one building.”
The Park Shore was originally a rental building; construction was completed in 1991. In 1997, the installation went condo. The Park Shore was a pioneer of the times, as everything was onsite. "There was a Bockwinkle's, dry cleaners, and a spa, now known as Olga's Day Spa. Residents did not have to leave the building."
While since the pandemic, not having to leave the building is commonplace, it created unique challenges for Darryl and his team. “The biggest project was keeping people working. They were afraid. We altered the scheduling and got through it. The older members of the staff were afraid of getting sick.”
Previously, Darryl served as president of the local union at Westinghouse Electric for 12 years before it closed. He is an "I go by the rules and do things by the book" sort of person and is actively involved in the hiring process along with building manager Edina Divic.
“I’m blessed with good residents. Sometimes you can tell when residents are having a bad day, so if they are low, I change the energy and go high.” Many residents have lived at the Park Shore for decades and smile when they see Darryl.
He cites his strength as his dedication to his job inspired by his Christian upbringing. Darryl believes another part of his success stems from a solid routine, “I go to bed around 7 p.m., eat a little something around 11 p.m., set the alarm for 3 a.m., eat at 5 a.m., and leave for work at 6 a.m.”
Darryl was born and raised in Chicago, with two brothers living in the area and a sister in Seattle. He describes himself as an “avid baseball fan” and likes fine dining and movies. He’s also a music enthusiast, “I like all sorts of music, jazz, soul, rock and blues and even did a few stints as a DJ back in the day.”
“I’m not ready to retire, but have faith that I will know when it’s time.” When he retires, he wants to travel and visit more with his sister in Seattle. Residents won't want him to retire.
