The Chicagoland suburb of Elgin is the "safest and most affordable" city in the US, according to a recent survey by financial website GoBankingRates.
The survey looked at factors including crime statistics, median income, living expenses, mortgage rates, and average home values for several of the nation's largest cities. The data for the study was gathered through May 3, 2024, according to NBC 5 Chicago.
Elgin nabbed the top spot for its median household income of $85,998, average mortgage expenses of $1,840, and monthly living expenses around $4,000. The city also boasted the lowest property and violent crime rates of all the surveyed locations.
Nearby Joliet ranked No. 17 in the top 50 of the survey. The southwest suburb boasts a median household income just below $85,000, average mortgage expenses of $1,427, and average monthly living expenses around $3,572.
Several other Midwest cities made the top 50 list including Sterling Heights, Michigan; Fort Wayne, Indiana; and Madison, Wisconsin.
