An analysis of Cook County’s property tax bills for 2022 reveals that the increased costs have heavily impacted school districts. According to Treasurer Maria Pappas, the median residential tax bill in the northern suburbs saw a $331 million, or 15.7% increase. This marks the most significant increase in at least 30 years.
With the reversal of COVID-era adjustments and a newly added provision in the Illinois tax code, taxing bodies are able to recover money from property owners, resulting in increased bills affecting homeowners. Pappas said that these tax hikes are primarily due to school districts. The districts have shown to be responsible for a significant portion of total bills, needing more money to operate.
The second installment of the 2022 tax bills will be distributed on Wednesday, November 1, and are due Friday, December 1.
