A group of historic residential buildings adjacent to Wrigley Field are facing demolition under a proposed development plan.
The project seeks to replace the existing buildings with a new 29-unit apartment complex, according to the 44th Ward site. The building would stand just over 56 feet high, and include sustainable design features that allow the building to blend with the architectural style of the neighborhood.
Despite support from 44th Ward Ald. Bennett Lawson, some residents have expressed concerns over the project. Local residents have started a petition to advocate for the preservation of the existing residential buildings.
The petition cites concerns that the new development would tower over other buildings in the neighborhood, blocking views of Wrigley Field and decreasing the overall quality of life for other community members.
Residents also cite the historical significance of the existing graystones as a reason to halt the project. One community member told Crain’s that replacing the graystones with a “generic” apartment building would reduce the cultural identity of the neighborhood and ultimately be a disservice to residents.
The development plan will face review at a meeting by the City Council's Committee on Zoning, Landmarks & Building Standards, which will determine its fate.
