The Obama Foundation has announced a pledge of $4 million to support the construction of an ADA accessible playground in Hyde Park’s Midway Plaisance Park. The new playground will be constructed near the Obama Presidential Center which is currently in development.

The 21,000 square-foot playground will include specialized play features to allow collaborative play, such as an ADA accessible swing, a wheelchair accessible slide, and sensory havens including a mud kitchen and a fragrance garden to foster quiet individual play for children with special sensory needs.

The Chicago Parks District has partnered with the Obama Foundation on the construction of the playground, approving the project on March 13. The playground marks an important step forward in increasing green space and community gathering areas in Chicago’s South Side.
