 Two of the most iconic features of the main square are the Old McHenry County Courthouse and the Opera House. Both buildings hold registered landmark status and are celebrated for their architectural beauty and historical significance. Together, they form the heart of Woodstock, reflecting both its past and its vibrant present.

 No discussion of Woodstock is complete without mentioning its role in the 1993 film Groundhog Day, starring Bill Murray. While the town's history spans much more, the film put Woodstock on the map for a new generation. Key scenes were shot at the Woodstock Opera House and the town square, with its historic streets providing the perfect backdrop for the movie's time-loop narrative.

Since the release of Groundhog Day, Woodstock has embraced its cinematic fame with an annual Groundhog Day Festival, featuring screenings, reenactments, and visits to filming locations. Beyond Groundhog Day, the town also appeared in the film Planes, Trains and Automobiles, starring John Candy and Steve Martin. Woodstock’s charming downtown, including the McHenry County Courthouse and Main Street, served as the quintessential small-town backdrop.

In 1990, Woodstock’s downtown also served as the backdrop for the live-action film Dick Tracy, starring Warren Beatty, Madonna, Dustin Hoffman, and Al Pacino. Based on the 1931 comic strip, Tracy became a pop culture symbol known for his crime-fighting and iconic yellow trench coat. Woodstock’s vintage architecture and charming streets were the perfect setting for this vibrant, stylish world.

 Woodstock also boasts a vibrant arts scene, featuring galleries, performance spaces, and a variety of cultural events. The annual Woodstock Art Fair on the Square is a two-day festival featuring over 75 artists, showcasing a diverse range of artwork, including paintings, photography, jewelry, and more. Visitors can enjoy live painting classes, a Kids Art Zone, and live music. On select Sundays, artists also display and sell their work in the square, accompanied by live performances.

Also renowned for its traditional farming practices that have been passed down through generations, local farmers’ markets showcase locally grown produce and handmade goods.
