The latest Michelin stars have been awarded, and Chicago has added a new three-star restaurant to its roster. Smyth, located in the West Loop, is one of Michelin’s newest top-tier restaurants.

The New American eatery is one of only two Chicago restaurants holding this esteemed designation. Helmed by accomplished chefs John Shields and Karen Urie Shields, Smyth stands alongside the city's other three-star gastronomic legend, Alinea.

Smyth quickly captured the attention of the international culinary world following its launch in 2016. The innovative restaurant garnered its first Michelin star soon after opening its doors and then secured a steady two-star ranking in 2017.

"This is an elite restaurant," said Gwendal Poullennec, the International Director of the Michelin Guides, in a statement, according to Crain’s. Michelin noted Smyth's propensity for pushing boundaries. Menu highlights include Dungeness Crab, smoked quail egg topped with caviar, and savory sweets like a corn macaron and dark chocolate tart.

Two other Chicago restaurants also received Michelin awards. Atelier by Chef Christian Hunter, and Indienne by Chef Sujan Sukar, both received single-star awards, joining the ranks of other local Michelin gems like Boka, Kasama, and Temporis.

Michelin also recently added several Chicago restaurants to its Bib Gourmand list, a catalog of restaurants offering exquisite food at affordable prices. Logan Square’s Cellar Door Provisions made the cut, thanks to its Mediterranean-inspired menu, a favorite amongst industry workers. Pompette, a Bucktown cafe and wine bar also secured a spot on the exclusive list.
