Uncle Julio's Lincoln Park outpost abruptly announced its closure on Thursday after 32 years of operation along North Avenue. The closure of the chain Mexican eatery came as a shock to employees and patrons of the establishment.

Uncle Julio's President RJ Thomas attributed the closure to escalating rental rates, according to Eater Chicago. The restaurant's other Chicagoland locations will remain open.

Uncle Julio's operates locations in Naperville, Schaumburg, Oakbrook, and other suburbs. The nearest remaining Uncle Julio's is at the Old Orchard Mall in Skokie. Employees of the shuttered Lincoln Park restaurant have reportedly been offered jobs at the chain's other local franchises.

Several other restaurants near the former Uncle Julios have closed their doors in recent years, such as the Goose Island Brewhouse, which closed in December, according to Block Club Chicago.
