The votes are in and pizza lovers around the U.S. have spoken: Chicago’s Pequod’s Pizza is the best in the nation according to business review site Yelp.
Pequod’s opened their first location in suburban Morton Grove in 1971, before expanding to their now-famous Lincoln Park location in the 80s, according to Yelp. Named after the ship in the classic novel Moby Dick, Pequod's has gained a dedicated following for its take on classic Chicago “Deep-Dish” pizza.
According to Yelp, Pequod’s signature pie is characterized by a soft thick crust with a crunchy base and a caramelized cheese layer around the edges.
Pequod’s General Manager Sean Asbra told Yelp that while their pizza might be considered Deep Dish style, the shop doesn’t focus on semantics. “We call it pan pizza, but really, it’s just our pizza: a unique take on traditional Chicago pizza,” he told the popular review site.
Pequod’s city outpost along Clybourn Avenue is no stranger to large crowds, so customers should plan ahead for their visit. Crafting the perfect pie takes time, so pizza lovers should also prepare to wait about 45 minutes for their pizza to bake.
According to ‘Yelpers’, Pequod’s signature pie is well worth the wait. “I usually don’t rant or rave about pizza… but this one’s a winner!” said one Yelp reviewer, Greg F. Another Yelper remarked, “You can’t truly say you have a favorite Chicago-style deep dish pizza if you haven’t been to Pequod’s.”
