WARWICK, R.I., Aug. 19, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Summer 2025 is delivering all-time high travel numbers – and iconic destinations are feeling the strain. According to the experts at InsureMyTrip, places like Venice, Santorini, Dubrovnik, and parts of Japan are experiencing overcrowding so severe that visitors are facing booking caps, entry fees, and overwhelmed infrastructure.
Which Destinations Are Feeling the Crowds?
- Venice, Italy - Venice sees tens of thousands of day-trippers daily in peak season. The city introduced entry fees and banned large cruise ships in 2021.
- Santorini & Mykonos, Greece - As of 2025, Greece is charging a €20 arrival fee per cruise passenger visiting these islands and enforcing a cap of 8,000 cruise arrivals per day in Santorini.
- Croatia Coast - Popular cities along Croatia's Adriatic coast have grown increasingly crowded during the summer months – thanks, in part, to social media. This is prompting efforts to manage cruise ship visits and preserve historical sites.
- Mount Fuji / Kyoto, Japan - Officials now limit Mount Fuji climbers to 4,000 per day, and Tokyo's Shibuya ward restricts public gatherings because of overtourism.
Why It Matters for Travelers
InsureMyTrip is tracking these overcrowding trends because they can lead to booking cancellations, denied entry, and disruptions. When travelers can't access planned accommodations or tours because of capacity caps, it can mean expensive and unplanned rebooking.
Traveler Tips
Rather than risk getting shut out, travelers can:
- Book accommodations well in advance
- Visit popular destinations during off-peak or shoulder seasons
- Choose less saturated alternatives like Zakynthos instead of Santorini, or the Italian Alps over Venice
How Travel Insurance Can Help
- Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) - If you don't feel comfortable traveling to your destination after hearing reports of overcrowding and newly imposed entry fees. There are qualification requirements, and you must cancel a trip at least two days before departure.
- Interrupt for Any Reason (IFAR) - If you get to your destination and it's not what you expected, you can interrupt your trip and return home early. If you qualify for coverage, it can reimburse up to 75% of your unused prepaid non-refundable trip cost. (You must interrupt your trip at least two days after departure.)
- Baggage Delay - If you get to your destination, but your bags don't. This can help to purchase necessities while you wait for your bags to catch up.
- Emergency Medical - If you're in a busy country and need emergency medical attention, this coverage can be very important to have so that you can submit resulting bills to the company for payment.
- 24hr Emergency Assistance - whether it's rebooking a hotel or finding a doctor or hospital when in an overcrowded destination, this service can be extremely helpful if an issue arises.
"Overbooked destinations don't just break itineraries – they inflate travel costs," says Suzanne Morrow, CEO of InsureMyTrip. "Insurance isn't just about disaster recovery – it can protect against crowd-driven trip derailments too."
