An astronaut has captured a whole city lit up by lightning.

NASA's Nichole Ayers managed to snap a thunderstorm over Singapore from the International Space Station (ISS) on Sunday (June 15).

The U.S. spacewoman said, "Sometimes we see lightning strikes that illuminate an entire city at once.

"This is Singapore last night, and that was a huge thunderstorm.

"It’s hard to believe, but these pictures were taken all in the span of 1/40 of a second!"

Online space fans were impressed.

Aurora Sky commented, "Illuminating Singapore in 1/40th of a second is breathtaking. Nature's power is unreal!", while Orpheus wrote, "Incredible! Another great example of our super-active little planet."

Jeormel Silva added, "The beauty of nature is truly astonishing; such brilliance."
