California family rescues woman from overturned, submerged vehicle

MARYSVILLE, California — A Marysville family is being hailed as heroes after saving a woman from a submerged vehicle following a rollover crash on November 25, 2024. The incident occurred around 12:20 p.m. on Larkin Road, north of Paseo Road, where 75-year-old Robbie Carpenter, of Live Oak, California, was trapped upside down in an irrigation canal.

Cyle Johnson, 28, his wife Ashley Martin, 27, and their 6-year-old daughter were visiting a residence on Larkin Road when their daughter witnessed the crash and alerted her parents. Cyle immediately jumped into the canal to assist, while Ashley followed to help. They found Carpenter unresponsive, with her head submerged, and managed to unlock and force open the vehicle door. An unknown passerby provided a knife to cut the seatbelt, allowing them to pull Carpenter to safety, according to the California Highway Patrol - Yuba-Sutter.

Carpenter was transported to Adventist Health and Rideout with minor injuries. The CHP praised the family's quick actions, stating, "Had it not been for the heroic actions of Cyle, Ashley, and their daughter, this would have been a much different outcome."

In an unrelated incident, Cyle Johnson was also first on the scene at a fatal wrong-way crash on SR-99 near Howsley Road on October 13, 2024, where he assisted another gravely injured individual, Ian Essary.
