VENTURA, California — A Newbury Park man has been charged with murder and corporal injury to a child, according to the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.
Zuberi Kalaikulokahiokalani Sharp, age 24, faces additional allegations, including the use of a deadly weapon and targeting a vulnerable victim.
Sharp made his initial court appearance, but no plea was entered as proceedings were suspended pending a competency hearing. He is scheduled to return to court on January 2, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. in courtroom 13 of the Ventura County Superior Court. The charges stem from an incident on December 5, 2024, when Sharp allegedly struck a minor with a pickaxe. Deputies from the Ventura County Sheriff's Office found the juvenile with severe injuries, and he was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Sharp was arrested nearby.
Senior Deputy District Attorney David Russell, from the Major Crimes Homicides Unit, is prosecuting the case. Sharp remains in custody without bail.
