U.S. egg prices retreated from their record highs in April but are still up 79% from a year ago.
The average price of eggs came in at $5.122 per dozen April, according to the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank and U.S. Bureau Labor of Statistics data released Tuesday.
That is down from a record $6.227 per dozen in March, down $1.105 per dozen — a 17.8% drop.
Egg prices soared earlier this year with the mass cullings of poultry during the Biden administration due to bird flu outbreaks.
Still, high egg prices became synonymous with post-pandemic inflation that has strained American household and added to record debt loads which total more than $18 trillion.
Overall, U.S. prices are up 25% from the end of 2019 and before the pandemic which stretched across Trump’s first term and the Biden administration.
President Donald Trump, who is in Saudi Arabia today as part of Middle East trip, has been touting efforts to lower egg prices and a cooling inflation environment.
Still, the price of eggs was $2.864 per dozen a year ago, according to the St. Louis Fed and BLS.
