GREENSBORO — The Town of Greensboro announced on Feb. 12 that its police department hired Sgt. Jeff Adams as its newest member, ending a long stretch during which Police Chief Lenox Trams was the town’s sole officer.

“Sgt. Adams brings 18 years of law enforcement experience and officially started on February 11,” The Town of Greensboro said in a Facebook post. “He’s currently completing his 80-hour FTO training, and we can’t wait for you to meet him.”

Trams has been the lone officer at Greensboro Police Department since September of 2024, and he is pleased to bring Adams on board.

“I’ve been there since March of 2023, and I’ve been trying to recruit only the highest best qualified officers, and it’s been a struggle,” Trams said. “So when I was down to myself I didn’t give up, I kept recruiting and I actually had the applicant who kind of met our standards, so he applied, and then he went through the hiring process and a very extensive background investigation, and I just hired him.”

Adams’ 18 years of law enforcement experience was one of these reasons Trams hired him, the police chief said, but also Adams’ 18 years of loyalty.

“Sergeant Adams has been at one agency for 18 years and that track record to me says a lot,” Trams said. “He’s very loyal to the agency, and he just doesn’t bounce around. We also look at like other factors of his application, but I think off the face, just having him be loyal to his one agency for 18 years says a lot.”

In September 2024, the town of Greensboro considered closing the police department because the public safety demands were too much for one officer to handle. The Caroline County Sheriff’s Office would have taken over the policing duties for the town.

Trams believes with this hire the conversations of dissolving the police department have been “tabled.” He hopes to continue to grow the staff at the Greensboro Police Department.

When Trams was by himself, Greensboro moved its offices into the police department’s building, with the town’s town hall experiencing maintenance concerns. But now there will be talks of moving the police department to another office since the plan will be to continue to grow the department, Trams said.

“I was by myself, so that was the best move at the time,” Trams said. “But now that I’m going to build up the agency and hire quality officers, we all can’t be in the same building, so there is some talking about putting the police department in another building.”
