The holidays are on their way! It’s the season of celebrations, gifts, parties, special treats and guests. Here are some tips to deck your halls with ease.
Create a holiday command center. Dedicate a spot in your home for all things holiday-related: calendars, gift lists, wrapping supplies, and recipe cards. Keep everything organized in one location.
Break down tasks week by week using a countdown planner. For example, Week 1: Send invites and finalize guest list. Week 2: Decorate and buy gifts. Week 3: Prep food and finalize entertainment plans.
Make your celebration collaborative. Assign specific tasks to family members or guests—someone brings appetizers, another handles music, and someone else organizes games.
Use online tools like Evite for invitations, Google Sheets for potluck planning, and Pinterest for organizing ideas. Use apps like Mint or spreadsheets to track expenses and prevent last-minute overspending. You can even use a QR code for digital menus or music playlists.
Cook and freeze certain dishes (like casseroles, cookie dough, or soups) ahead of time to save effort later on. These can also make nice gifts.
Make the holidays eco-friendly. Use paper and other natural products like fabric, cloth ribbon and string when wrapping your gifts. Choose reusable decorations and LED lights. Encourage guests to bring reusable containers for leftovers.
Make use of a small corner of your kitchen or dining room for a hot beverage station with coffee, teas, and hot chocolate. Use clear jars with coloured, fabric ribbon for marshmallows, cocoa powder, candy canes and cinnamon to add a festive flair.
Use hand-woven baskets to store holiday items like blankets, gifts, or guest slippers to add a touch of style.
Create a dedicated area in your kitchen or garage for the extra garbage, recyclable gift wrap, boxes, and packaging to streamline post-celebration cleanup. Remember that Styrofoam can be taken to your local Eco-Centre.
Donate a toy for a child or food to a food bank, buy a meal for someone in need, send a card and note to a person who feels lonely. The holidays can be difficult for some people. This will also help you to stay grounded and remember the real spirit of the season.
On a final note, take care of yourself, know your limits and boundaries, let go of perfectionism, ask for help, rest and enjoy yourself. Happy holidays and seasons greetings to all!
