PEBBLE BEACH, California — A woman in her 40s reported being tied to a tree at gunpoint in a wooded area of Pebble Beach, prompting an investigation by the Monterey County Sheriff's Office.
The incident occurred on December 4, 2024, when the woman was walking on a trail between Haul Road and Highway 68 around 7:30 a.m. She noticed a suspicious man following her, who then allegedly pulled out a gun and tied her to a tree before fleeing on foot, according to a press release from the Monterey County Sheriff's Office.
The woman was found nearly two hours later by a passerby and another individual who helped untie her. She was not injured, assaulted, or robbed.
The suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his 30s, wearing a green hat and grey sweater, with a tattoo on the right side of his neck beginning with the letter Z. Despite an extensive search by Monterey County Sheriff's Deputies, Pebble Beach Security, and a CalFire Drone Team, the suspect was not located.
The incident led to false reports of an active shooter on social media, prompting the Monterey County Sheriff's Office to clarify that no such reports were made. As a precaution, Stevenson School was placed on lockdown, and Pebble Beach Company implemented a shelter-in-place order at their maintenance yard and nearby Poppy Hills area.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are seeking information about a possible witness described as a female wearing black clothing and walking a large black dog. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Monterey County Sheriff's Office at 831-755-5111.
