flu season

NEW ORLEANS — For the second year in a row, Louisiana is number one in the country for early-season influenza cases.

CDC numbers show Louisiana had the most flu activity in the country last week, tied with Washington, D.C. Both are considered in the ‘high’ range but bordering on ‘very high’.

More than 11 percent of flu tests in Louisiana were positive, compared to a 3.5 percent positivity rate nationwide.

Statewide data from the Louisiana Department of Health shows RSV is wreaking havoc here, too, with 18 percent test positivity.

Most people showing up to the emergency room have either some combination of covid, flu, or RSV, or just the flu alone.

Data shows that, by far, most patients who end up in the emergency room are four years old or younger.

The flu can be deadly, especially for small children or older adults.

There’s still time to get your flu shot, but it’s always easy to wash your hands, cover your cough, and to stay home if you aren’t feeling well.
