HAYWARD — A man charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the death of 42-year-old Cary Lynn Elkin in the Town of Sand Lake on March 21, 2021, has been bound over for trial.
Manly Michael McDermott, 32, is incarcerated on a $1 million cash bond in the Sawyer County Jail. A preliminary hearing was held before Judge Monica Isham in Sawyer County Circuit Court Nov. 12.
Isham bound McDermott over for trial and set his arraignment for Jan. 2, 2025. McDermott also is charged with two counts of possession of a firearm by an out-of-state felon.
Elkin’s body was found in her home at 5311N Hungry Lake Ln. by a friend of Elkin’s husband, Timothy. The caller told the deputy that that he located Cary deceased on the bedroom floor. The cause of death was gunshot wounds, according to the Sawyer County coroner.
Timothy told a detective that on March 18, 2021, Cary told him not to come to the house because she had company. He believed the company to be McDermott of Bemidji, Minn., whom she had recently started dating.
Timothy stated he left a 2001 Ford truck at the residence. Around March 30, he attempted to contact Cary and had received no response. He then decided to go check on her on April 1.
A detective said that he found metal fragments of a handgun bullet and a shotgun slug near Cary’s body. Officers recovered a .22 caliber handgun and a 12-gauge shotgun from the bedroom.
Authorities say evidence obtained through search warrants, interviews and forensic analysis led them to identify McDermott as a suspect in her shooting death.
