TIPTON COUNTY, Tenn. - A house fire on New Year's Day in Tipton County killed a man and his pet, officials said.

According to Tipton County Sheriff Shannon Beasley, deputies along with the county's Fire Department responded just before 6:50 p.m. Wednesday to a house fire on Crigger Road in the neighborhood of Quito. They arrived to find about 25% of the home on fire and started battling it.

Fire personnel went inside the home to find a man and his pet had died, Sheriff Beasley said.

The sheriff said that a preliminary investigation found that the fire was caused by a faulty wall heater. The man's official cause of death was unknown, pending an autopsy, the sheriff added.

"As many families gathered to ring in the new year last night, we unfortunately have a family that is mourning the tragic loss of a loved one," Sheriff Beasley said in a statement Wednesday. "Our thoughts and prayers are with this family, and we ask our community to join us. It is a very sad and tragic situation."
