drag racing

SHREVEPORT, La. - Community members, along with City Councilwoman Tabatha Taylor, have had enough of drag racing going on around Lakeshore Drive.

The racing has reportedly been going on in Ford Park for weeks now. Residents said it happens on Sundays starting at 4 p.m. and lasts for hours.

"I live probably a mile from there and can't even sit on my back porch. It is so loud, and the vehicles and the public safety are really my concern," said Gwen Brunkey.

Ford Park and South Lakeshore Drive are covered in skid marks, evidence of burnouts and fast driving.

"It's those three-wheel vehicles that I'm not even sure if they're legal or not. They are zooming down the road. They don't obey stop signs," said Brunkey.

The residents say they are even afraid to leave their house after a certain time because of the reckless driving.

"So it's very scary. Thank goodness nobody's been killed yet. That's my concern," said Regina Bond.

Taylor brought up the issue to Police Chief Wayne Smith. SPD is working to get the situation under control.

"What we want people to understand is that this does not need to happen on public streets. You think that you have control of a car? No, you do not. At any given point in time, you can lose your life or you can cause someone else to lose their lives; it is a disturbance and a disruption. There is a track in Gilliam; go and use that," said Taylor.

There was no sign of drag racing this Sunday, and there was an increased police presence patrolling the area.
