In a world obsessed with strength, influence, and control, the quest for power often leads us down paths that stray from the essence of true spiritual might. But what does real power look like in the context of our faith?
The first and foremost source of true power is the love of God. John 3:16 reminds us, ”For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” This act of supreme love is the ultimate demonstration of God’s power. It is not a power that seeks to dominate or control, but one that redeems and heals.
In our daily lives, you and I are called to reflect this divine love. This love is transformative, as it heals broken relationships, mends wounded hearts, and brings light into the darkest corners of our existence. When we love others as Christ loves us, we tap into a power that transcends any earthly authority.
I think about the story of a young boy who found a butterfly struggling to emerge from its chrysalis. Wanting to help, he gently peeled the chrysalis open, but the butterfly emerged with weak wings and couldn’t fly. The boy learned that the struggle to emerge was necessary for the butterfly to gain strength. Similarly, our struggles and challenges, when met with God’s love, build our spiritual strength and allow us to soar in faith.
In Matthew 17:20, Jesus tells his disciples, ”If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Faith is a potent force that unlocks God’s power in our lives. It is through faith that we experience that power at work.
Are we trusting God with our struggles, fears, and uncertainties? When we place our faith in Him, we are inviting His power to intervene in our circumstances. It is not about the size of our faith, but the greatness of the God in whom we place our faith.
Additionally, prayer is our direct line to God, and it holds immense power. James 5:16b declares, ”The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” Through prayer, we communicate our deepest desires, concerns and praises to the Almighty. Many can personally testify to seeing God’s power at work through prayer, and it is through prayer that we seek God’s guidance, strength and intervention.
Whether in moments of joy or trials, we should remember that prayer connects us to the source of all power. It aligns our will with God’s will and brings about change in ways we may not fully comprehend.
Believer also possess the power that comes with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Acts 1:8 tells us, ”But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” The Holy Spirit empowers us to live out our faith boldly and effectively. It is the Holy Spirit that equips us with spiritual gifts and enables us to bear the fruit of the Spirit.
As believers, we aren’t left to navigate this journey alone. The Holy Spirit dwells within us, guiding, comforting and empowering us.
Jesus exemplified true power through humility. Philippians 2:6-8 describes how He, ”being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!”
In our society which often equates power with dominance, Jesus teaches us that true power lies in humility and servanthood. As we serve others with humility, we reflect the heart of Christ and reveal the transformative power of the Gospel.
This week, let us strive to embody the aspects of the power of God in our lives. The power of God’s love, faith, prayer, the Holy Spirit, and humility are cornerstones of a vibrant and impactful Christian walk.
