Hundreds of boxes of blueberries have been pulled from distribution over concerns of listeria contamination. TODAY reported that the voluntary recall involves 400 boxes of organic blueberries weighing 30 pounds each, which originated from Alma Pak International in Georgia.
The recall, initiated on Monday, June 9, reached a critical escalation when the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) assigned it a Class I risk on Tuesday, July 1, indicating "reasonable probability" of severe health consequences or even death. As reported by Newsweek, this classification is the most severe on the FDA's scale.
The blueberries were shipped to a single customer in North Carolina, specifically identified by lot numbers 13325 G1060 and 13325 G1096. MassLive added that Listeria was discovered during routine testing of the company's products.
Listeria monocytogenes, the bacterium involved, is known for causing serious infections, especially in vulnerable populations such as pregnant women, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of listeriosis can range from mild—including fever and muscle aches—to severe, such as headaches, stiff neck, and confusion, which can lead to meningitis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it's the third-leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the US.
Alma Pak International assured that the affected products were fully recovered before reaching grocery stores, thus eliminating immediate consumer danger. The company, in coordination with the FDA and the Georgia Department of Agriculture, carried out a comprehensive investigation and implemented enhanced food safety practices. They confirmed that post-recall tests showed no further listeria presence, according to a company statement to Newsweek.
Consumers concerned about potential exposure should immediately consult healthcare providers, especially if they experience symptoms mimicking those of listeriosis. The FDA's notice remains active, advising continuous vigilance.
