The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced the recall of more than 16,000 pounds of raw ground beef over potential E. Coli contamination.
According to a statement from the FSIS, the recall stems from Cargill Meat Solutions in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, which produced the contaminated beef products on April 26 and 27. The products were then reportedly shipped to Walmart stores across the nation.
According to the FSIS, E. Coli is a bacteria that can cause severe illness. Symptoms include dehydration and abdominal cramps. Most healthy adults recover from E. Coli infections, but the illness can pose life-threatening complications, particularly in children and seniors.
The FSIS urges consumers to check their refrigerators for any raw beef products that could be affected by the recall. Specifically, ground beef purchased at Walmart should be checked and disposed of if impacted by the recall. Visit the FSIS site for information on all affected products.
