McDonald's has officially announced the return of its beloved Snack Wrap after a nine-year absence, with the item set to hit restaurant menus on July 10, according to All Recipes. The decision to bring back Snack Wraps stems from persistent customer demand and business strategy, as detailed by AP News. Despite being discontinued nearly a decade ago, customers have continued ordering Snack Wraps at drive-thrus, demonstrating unwavering loyalty to the menu item. Fan advocacy has been remarkable, with a Change.org petition gathering nearly 19,000 signatures and a Facebook group dedicated to urging McDonald's to resurrect the wrap.
The company spent years perfecting the comeback, first developing better fried chicken strips called McCrispy Strips in early May, then updating preparation tools and training procedures. AP News explains that McDonald's simplified the offering compared to the original version, eliminating grilled chicken options and reducing sauce varieties to just Ranch and Spicy flavors. This streamlined approach aims to ensure faster service and easier execution for restaurant crews across 13,500 U.S. locations.
The Snack Wrap's return addresses multiple market challenges facing McDonald's and the broader fast-food industry, USA Today reports. Same-store sales declined 3.6% in the first quarter compared to the previous year, with inflation driving average fast-food checks up 41% since 2019. The lower-priced Snack Wrap could attract cost-conscious customers who have reduced restaurant visits due to rising prices.
Additionally, the timing coincides with increased competition, as Popeyes introduced its own chicken wraps on June 2, while Burger King and Wendy's have offered similar items since 2023.
