Legendary rock producer and longtime Chicago figure Steve Albini passed away on May 7 due to a heart attack. Albini was 61. His death was confirmed to Pitchfork by staff at his Chicago recording studio, Electrical Audio.

As reported by Pitchfork, Albini was best known for his work as an audio engineer. Albini was a celebrated figure in alternative music, with credits on classic albums such as Nirvana's In Utero, Pixies' Surfer Rosa, and PJ Harvey's Rid of Me. Although Albini was commonly recognized as a producer, he preferred being referred to as an "engineer."

Throughout his career, Albini maintained a strong voice against exploitative practices in the music industry. He remained active in the industry throughout his later years and was preparing to embark on a tour with his band Shellac at the time of his passing.

Born in Pasadena, California, Albini frequently moved as a child before settling in Missoula Montana with his family. There he discovered the Ramones, an event that reportedly changed the course of his life.

During his college years he relocated to Chicago, becoming immersed in the city's underground punk scene. Albini opened his famed Chicago recording studio in 1995, and continued to record at the space until his death.

Apart from his extensive music career, Albini was an accomplished poker player. According to Pitchfork, he won a World Series of Poker gold bracelet in 2022 after defeating 773 other players in the $1,500 entry H.O.R.S.E. competition, winning a massive prize of $196,089. Known for his quirky attire during poker games, Albini was often photographed wearing whimsical hats and shirts featuring various rock bands.

Many in the music and entertainment industries have expressed their condolences and shared memories of Albini, including the band Pixies, actor Elijah Wood, Superchunk drummer Jon Wurster, and others.
