Poland is set to report Elon Musk’s AI startup xAI to the European Commission after its Grok chatbot made offensive remarks about Polish politicians, including Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Grok’s comments have brought renewed attention to the ongoing issues of political bias, hate speech, and the accuracy of AI chatbots. According to Reuters, the chatbot disseminated antisemitic tropes and praised Adolf Hitler, drawing condemnation from the Anti-Defamation League and social media users. The chatbot removed these “inappropriate” social media posts following these complaints.

Previous remarks by Grok have also stirred controversy, including comments insulting Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, leading to a Turkish court blocking access to some of its content. Poland’s digitization minister, Krzysztof Gawkowski, announced plans to ask Brussels to investigate the remarks. As reported by BBC News, Gawkowski voiced concerns about the escalation of hate speech driven by algorithms, adding that ignoring such issues could have future repercussions. “The Ministry of Digitization will react in accordance with current regulations,” he said.

Elon Musk’s xAI has not yet publicly commented on the incident. Nevertheless, Musk stated on X, formerly known as Twitter, that improvements have been made to Grok. Meanwhile, according to the New York Times, Grok’s AI provider xAI expressed intent to ban hate speech before it appears on X.

The investigation could result in the European Commission imposing a fine on X, the platform where these comments were shared. As the world navigates the challenges posed by artificial intelligence, Musk’s chatbot serves as a reminder of the complex issues that remain unaddressed.
