On Wednesday night, a SpaceX Starship exploded into a massive fireball at the Star base facility in Boca Chica, Texas. The event transpired around 11 p.m. local time, marking another significant anomaly for SpaceX. This explosion took place during a test as SpaceX prepared for the Starship's tenth flight test, according to Fox Business.
SpaceX confirmed that no injuries were reported and all personnel were safe and accounted for. The company maintained a safety-clear area around the site throughout the operation, ensuring no hazards posed a threat to the surrounding communities. Residents were advised to avoid the area while ongoing safety operations continue, according to a statement on X.
The explosion was visually captured by multiple livestreams, with footage showing the spectacular blowout. Initial reports from CBS News indicate that the Starship, including a Super Heavy rocket, was being fueled with liquid oxygen and high-energy methane at the time of the incident. The Starship is part of SpaceX's ambitions to build a fully reusable system to transport cargo and crew to the Moon and Mars.
Despite the catastrophic failure, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk took to X, nonchalantly calling the event "Just a scratch." The Starship's completion for the test flight series marks the tenth attempt, with only three prior tests considered partially successful, while others culminated in explosions or complete structural breakup, as reported by the BBC.
The successful launch of Starship, known as Ship 36, was anticipated by the end of June atop a giant Super Heavy booster. Despite this setback, SpaceX remains resolute in its plans to realize human colonization of other planets through its powerful, reusable spacecraft technology.
