On May 31, Philadelphia's University of the Arts (UArts) announced it would permanently close after 150 years in the heart of the city, leaving students searching for a resolution before the school closes permanently on June 7.
In a statement, the University attributed the sudden closure to increasing expenses and a lack of sufficient funding. According to the Washington Times, the institution lost its accreditation just before the decision to close the school was announced. Accreditation certifies that an educational institution meets the necessary standards by the Department of Education.
According to multiple reports, two rallies took place on Friday to demonstrate support for the school as preparations to close the institution were being made.
According to ABC6, the Philadelphia City Council has initiated an investigation into the abrupt closure, and 9 former university staff members have filed a class-action lawsuit in response to the insufficient notice given for the closure. Federal law mandates employers provide 60 days' notice to employees regarding planned layoffs. The university reportedly gave only a week's notice, according to ABC6.
The Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office, which conducts oversight of nonprofit organizations, is also examining the closure, according to reports.
Temple University has announced it is considering a potential merger with UArts, according to ABC6, and has stated it will open its doors to students impacted by the shocking closure.
The shocking closure follows a recent trend of college closures and cutbacks nationwide. Earlier this week,Columbia College Chicago announced plans to lay off 70 staff members and slash dozens of classes amid financial struggles.
